Dr Marcus Tomalin is the Project Manager of Giving Voice to Digital Democracies: The Social Impact of Artificially Intelligent Communications Technology, funded by the Humanities and Social Change International Foundation. Marcus was educated at Cambridge University and Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada. He has been a member of the Machine Intelligence Laboratory in the Department of Engineering since 1998, and he has been the Director of Studies for Philosophy at Downing College since 2007. His research interests focus upon different aspects of the analysis of the relationship between natural language and mathematics, and, therefore, the academic areas with which he is most closely involved include philosophy, theoretical linguistics, and speech recognition technology. He has written at length about the interconnections between mathematics, logic, and syntactic theory, and about various sub-domains of speech technology, such as speech recognition, speech synthesis, and machine translation.
