So zeigt sich, dass im Schmerz nicht ein Phänomen unter vielen, sondern das für die Ausbildung des Denkens und des psychischen Apparates ursprünglichste und wesentlichste zu sehen ist: Weil Schmerz die grundlegendste Form der Repräsentation unseres Körpers veranlasst und jede andere Repräsentation immer an den Körper gebunden bleibt, ist der Schmerz der sich dem Denken entziehende Urgrund des Denkens – ein ›Jenseits‹ des Denkens, das uns unverlierbar an das Diesseits unseres Körpers erinnert. Die Notwendigkeit, überhaupt zu denken, beginnt mit dem Schmerz. Und wenn wir Schmerz denken, denken wir unseren Körper. In diesem Sinne ist es der Schmerz, aus dem sich das Denken und der gesamte psychische Apparat entwickeln."@de,
    "What is pain? How is it perceived and how is it processed? Where is it situated and how can it be specified within the framework of a theory of the psychic apparatus? These problems arose for Sigmund Freud ever since his »Project for a Scientific Psychology« in 1895, and throughout the development of his œuvre, he encountered them again and again and in the most diverse of contexts, without, however, ever being conclusively resolved. This article traces how the phenomenon of pain has repeatedly defied theory, forcing it to be questioned and revised.
